International Workshop on

Advances in Photovoltaics and Photocatalysis

Chairpersons: Paolo Lugli (TUM) and Aldo Di Carlo (U.Roma “Tor Vergata”)

21-22 July 2011 Technische Universität München

Munich, Germany

The workshop is part of the "Deutsch-Italienische Dialoge 2011", a program of the Deutsch-Italienische Hochschulzentrum / Ateneo Italo -Tedesco.

Venue of the workshop is the Institute for Advanced Study  of TUM (Lichtenbergstraße 2a, 85748 Garching) on

July 21st (9:00-19:00) and

July 22nd (9:00-16:00), 2011.

Organizers are the TUM Institute for Advanced Study, the TUM Institute for Nanoelectronics and the University of Rome Tor Vergata.

Considerable interest is attributed this days to renewable energies, which are seen as the best way to provide the necessary energy sources needed in the future by reducing at the same time the amount of CO2 generated and diffuse in the environment. Among all alternative sources, sunlight is the most abundant and cleanest one. Unfortunately, the exploitation of solar energy is limited by the reduced efficiency and high cost of solar energy conversion systems. The workshop will deal with two approaches to energy conversion, namely photovoltaics (PV) and photocatalysis (PC). In particular, new generation solar cells will be discussed as PV applications, water splitting and CO2 reduction for solar fuel production for PC ones. Experts in the two fields will come together, mainly from Germany and Italy. Some international high standard researchers will also be invited. One of the main topics will be the influence of nanotechnology on PV and PC energy conversion systems.

Goal of the workshop will be to create a link between the two communities that have being ignoring one another and open the way for a common approach that can combine effectively the know-how of physicist and engineers on PV and of chemists on PC. In order to present a coherent overview and to maximize interaction and discussion, the workshop will have only invited contributions with a total of approximately 20 talks. A poster session will be organized for young researchers who want to present their results.
